Decoding communication in the digital age

It was a lazy Thursday evening.I was chatting with a friend over watsapp.Shifted tabs to look for a smiley...The conversation was so engaging that I often resorted to using smileys. My smiley history ranged from puzzled to perplexed, smiling to blushing to rofling. Jinxed with some mischievous ones..Now if I have elicited the so what response from you..Just hold on. If you look at someone's watsapp smiley history(do it on your own accord, don't cite my article ;) ) you might notice an assorted range of smileys or memes or emoticons.Whatever! Don't they tell you something.Something about how the person is at heart or his inherent personality? No? Well,I have a friend who is a little childish at heart even short tempered sometimes.I observed that while chatting with her she resorted to using smileys that forayed the gray shades of emotions.Angry-yellow with anger, red with anger.Irritated, frowning, sad et al. That gave me an interesting insight into her personality....

Decoding the gray cells

Another knowledge seeking lesson at the library. I start with a book I have been meaning to study. I do not literally start studying as I happen to cast a glare upon a insignificant seeming palm sized magazine. I am intrigued by the cover page and the title which reads 'The Human Brain' It's time to decipher the true engine of creation. The picture is very vivid too, half showing a walnut like image we always picture the brain to be like and the other half a PCB with a chip and an intricate network of connection. Truly there couldn't be a better way to depict the powerhouse of human bodies. Very true to the essence of the dictum,'A picture speaks a thousand words'. Now actually opening the leaflet a picture of the brain materializes before my eyes.Nothing out of the ordinary. A diagram with labelled parts and their functions, as we all have been doing for a majority of out school and college lives. Although I find a few areas I never knew existed....

Naadan Parinde Ghar aaja

A high voltage drama involving emotions, bonding and hatred. No, I am not describing the Rahman sound track nor the movie Rockstar. This drama entails the struggle of a bird to free itself from the clutches of human insanity. Every morning , the cheerful cries of the birds fill one with joy  as they go on with the daily humdrum of day to day activities. It is really an enlivening experience to watch them. And a rare bird sighting even makes your day. But today morning was different.Yes there were cries all around. But they were panic-stricken.Helpless cries. It was as if they were mourning something. We went outside to make some sense of the commotion. What we saw almost brought the horror of the news the day before come alive.A bird was caught with its wing entangled in the kite string that hung loose from an electric pole. What we saw next wrenched our hearts completely. While the bird in question floated freely and struggled once in a while. We thought it had given up all hopes of sal...

Mahashweta-A review

Just done reading 'Mahashweta' by Sudha Murty.A seemingly subtle story with a deep underlying message.A young, beautiful girl and and a rich, handsome boy fall in love and get married.Suddenly she contracts Leukoderma, and the world changes for her.It is a story written with great passion and social bearing. It brings the inner turmoil of people inflicted with such misery.Which is inflicted not by the disease but by the society, which treats such people as outcasts. The plot of the love story is almost dream like a radiant, ravishingly beautiful girl. And a boy endowed with the riches of wealth and intelligence alike. They are inseparable like the peacock and the rain, the moon and the moon bird. And then what goes wrong that he abandons her,the society disowns her is worth finding out! And if you get a recently published hard copy of the book, the postscript that follows is equally bewitching.

Ambulance without a siren

Usually there is nothing to watch out for on a busy highway.Office goers, people stuffed into buses like cotton in pillows.Yes there are eye-catchers like road accidents but that's nothing one would hope to see.Today just like any other day as I was waiting for the TCS bus along with another associate I saw a huge vehicle just like the one used to ferry cars. This one was with the exception of iron bars and the words, 'Horse Ambulance' written in big bold letters. Now that I have uncovered the mystery of the ambulance sans siren you can relax! I was highly amused and so was the other lady with me.Never had we seen such a unique ambulance prior to this day! Agree, there must be one for animals lest they need to be ferried long distances to reach a vet. Surprise lead to suspicion and Suspicion to assurance as I indeed saw a tall, elegant silhouette form behind the bars.As the sunlight gave way the golden mane and the glistening tail came into light. What a beauty!  But the ve...

And The mountains echoed..poetic review

The following piece of poetry is meant to be a book review for Khalid Hossieni's And the mountains echoed albeit poetic. I ferry a big fat book on my back to read I read it mostly not..for my eyes can't see Not that I am blind but 'coz they steal the light away God the sun and the driver the tube light.. When doth my journey to home take flight. When I doth scarcely read it i loose myself to it I turn the pages as though I live by another life The brother sister intrigues me as mine I grieve desperately at their loss and clutch my brother's hand Lest he too drift away from me as did pari midst the sand. I live a dozen lives more while hoping for pari to meet her abollah And then my faith sinks as does pari's wrinkles rise A question lingers.. Will she remember to remember abdullah then as a silver lining comes a call Tells pari the story of her history et al The oak tree, the swing ,the house the cart, the shadow of a burly canine a soft ...

Let It Rain

I snoozed in my arm chair I saw a worm struggle I set it free,to ease its dismay But then I saw there was nay 'Coz it had wilted away. All the time I thought the heavens wept they were promises kept Whilst I complained of the mid daylight 'twere the blessings shining bright. I grieved of walking alone I knew not he carried me home. The risk in staying a bud is far more perilous than becoming a flower. The worm that struggles flies its best For after all, the best thing to do when 'tis raining is Let It Rain.

Every question deserves an Answer

At some point or the other in life, we find a question staring us into our face. The quest for finding answers to questions has been a journey that began at the birth of mankind, and it still stares us into our face. There are numerous questions, some small, some grave, some silly and some brave. All of them keep us fixated into finding answers. But everybody does not get their share of answers,it is ones who stick till the end who continue to pursue their conquest till the end. As goes the popular idiom, 'Every cloud has a silver lining' . We do find answers to the everyday questions in life albeit with some delay. It is the gravity of the questions that decides when we get our answers. The answers to the smaller questions are like dewdrops on the blades of grass. You brush past by them, and they land on your feet.It is the bigger ones, which need digging, introspection and patience. Nature's law of symmetry is omnipresent and omnipotent, good and evil, dark and light, joy ...

John's Story

It was pouring heavily,John, a poor peasant was standing under a shade waiting for the rain to stop. Towards the end of the road where eyes could reach,John noticed people pass by a car blaring the alert lights. They waited for a brief moment and then passed on. This went on until John decided to move out from the shade and check out what was wrong. On moving closer to the car,he saw that there was an old lady seated inside. On inquiring, the lady told John that her car had broken down and  required help. She had failed trying to summon for help.   As luck would have it,John was a car mechanic. Though he was running late for home,Considering the lady's plight he immediately agreed to help her. The lady was very thankful to him, and offered him 100$ extra as a token of thanks. But John promptly refused saying that,"Someone did good to me ,when I was in need. Now the goodness is with me and I want to share it with you."  A few miles ahead, the  lady saw a coffee...

When I lie...

T he smile on my lips is a lie the blush in my eyes, even bigger a lie that's the time, hind the pillow I rush to cry. The hole in my heart, the void in my soul give me back the heart you stole You are on my mind, you make me whole And when you are gone nothing shall remain but a hole. The promises of love, the promise to live forever The strings of life woven together And when you bid adieu does that mean for ever? Thy promised me joys worth a lifetime And when you are gone, there persists only time sans life I am living to watch you die when you drift away I am already dying inside. To keep your heart beating at least for a while. when i smile you know tis a lie.

Give me a reason I want to smile Give me the hope to tread, yet another mile Too long has passivity bound me Too long my life turbulent has been put my sails on rest,to be peaceful I am keen Open thine arms and let me fall Give my tumultuous youth,a passion to think and stop But for everything my living is a bane. Give me all sunshine,I want no pain My heart is frail give me trail to follow, where love may prevail. It's been long my eyes have been hollow since ages they've been made to many a tears swallow. Reasons are many, for me to die Give my existence a meaning I want to try Break all Barricades Give me the sky Open my wings and let me fly!

THE MAN IN THE GLASS

When you get what you want in your struggle for self And the world makes you king for a day Just go to a mirror and look at yourself And see what THAT man has to say. For it isn't your father or mother or wife Whose judgment upon you must pass The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life Is the one staring back from the glass. Some people may think you a straight-shootin' chum And call you a wonderful guy, But the man in the glass says you're only a bum If you can't look him straight in the eye. He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest, For he's with you clear up to the end, And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test If the man in the glass is your friend. You may fool the whole world down the pathway of life And get pats on your back as you pass, But your final reward will be heartaches and tears If you've cheated the man in the glass. by Dale Wimbrow

The Poet To Death by Sarojini Naidu

TARRY a while, O Death, I cannot die While yet my sweet life burgeons with its spring; Fair is my youth, and rich the echoing boughs Where dhadikulas sing. Tarry a while, O Death, I cannot die With all my blossoming hopes unharvested, My joys ungarnered, all my songs unsung, And all my tears unshed. Tarry a while, till I am satisfied Of love and grief, of earth and altering sky; Till all my human hungers are fulfilled, O Death, I cannot die!

O mother 'o mine

Image
Today in the morning upon the shores I saw women of forties lazily stroll Holding hands, walking eyes in the skies They spoke of joy and of cheer Together they explored fantasies anew Bid adieu to worry, and goodbye to fears Then flashed upon my mind dearest mother 'o mine How hath she waken when dawn and hurried until dusk? Engaged in bread winning and baking Mother 'o mine How did thy manage to bake me so fine? O' mother hast thou eight hands? that you go performing dancer like. Or hast thou a billion hearts that overflowed with love and compassion. O' mother 'o mine, in your starlit eyes do there shine dreams only of children of thine? Did ever thy look back upon dreams in the past you nurtured. In living life, thou livest for thy children O' mother 'o mine countless of thine sacrifices suffice in my mind,as in my heart your love thrives. The bread thou baketh in me the fruit of thy proficiency shall sweeten thy life with honey of pride.

Career after engineering

Air, water, food, clothing and shelter are the five basic necessities of man. Everything else is a luxury .Does that really hold true? .And even if that does, how many are able to secure all of it in a right measure .This has caused an unfathomable economic divide between the rich and the poor. The rich get richer and the poor even poorer. The middle class is caught in middle; neither does it have a lump sum bank balance to fall back upon nor does it have the recklessness to shove away responsibilities. In such a situation ‘Education’ is the only commodity he can rely upon. The Indian middle class estimated to be a 300 million people, and each one striving for a decent living; the competition gets even worse. Every Tom, Dick and Harry obtains a degree and then sets out in search of a job. If this had been the scenario a few decades back, a degree meant a big thing. Getting a job to satisfy one’s needs was even easier. But nowadays, with increasing standard of education. Demands have i...

A mile after mile

I can’t ask thou for help oh God, I simply can’t. Because, I know thou blesseth only efforts Where mine art meager? The answer beholds eternity alone. My heart is so strong, tough like a rock, Are dead all its feelings Are killed all its desires by the start of the clock. I can’t cry out my troubles, nor console my fears; For there are those, who by my single tear are disheartened, Or those whose notoriety doth enfeeble my life, and my being, And whose mirth calls it ‘compete’! A friend that was parted long back, Whose touch, whose presence seems like a mirage yonder hills, Beyond the skies. Floats over eyes, along days and twilights. But disappear like mist, As in myths did goddesses or as did dreams When day lights. If life is so, what different could death be? May be that meant rest, may be that meant peace Peace for now and forever Peace for thine heart, and for thy kin A sullen silence that healeth all pain All’s silent, but then just one question thrives. “Was the purpose of ...

Just One More....

As years rolleth into months, as did days to hours; as blossoms swirled with the wind into another world at bay. Every dying man to his God, just one thing say. God just one more moment yet another hour a single more breath. give my hand a little more heat. That he may bid adieu Before disappearing into the blue The final Good-Bye. the last glimpse of each eager eye. The games he played, the friends he made. the penny he stole, the lie he spoke the lashes he bore. The subjects he studied, the notes he copied. girls he teased the one he finally married. Father to the children he had been, his own childhood in them he had seen. The Mary of his life, his love ,his wife, For whom he earned ,money all his life. To give her love, now to her needs serve. He asks his God Oh God,just one more....... .....the last chance one single time.....

life's......diwali

Image
Life's nothing ...but all a season of diwali chill at dusk and chill at dawn All shimmer and quiver adorn the dark when doth day-start,day-end The childish twinkles of a sparkler the explosion of ever-flowing youth the agile colours of fantasy; the serene luminiscence of diyas age-old the message they carry, the truth they behold, The sweet crisp of relationships the exchange of love the bondings that brotherhood cove. Life's nothing ...but all a season of diwali; comes with grandeur, goes with pomp Leaves behind sullen silence reminiscent memories dense.
